Session 20: "... We also did a tour to Austria"

"...we also did a tour to Austria"

We forgot last week that we also did a tour to Austria. Austria is an alpine country with many high mountains, lakes and river valleys. We are on vacation at a mountain farm. In winter the dairy cows are in the barn and in summer the cows are on the pastures. The pastures are high mountain meadows that have deep snow in winter and are only free of snow in May. On the alp, the cows are milked daily and the milk is often made into cheese. We hiked to the Alm in the evening and with a schnapps and a warm fire we enjoyed the silence of the mountains and the chimes of the cowbells. We slept in the mountain hut and were woken up in the morning by the ringing of the cowbells of the cows that had been brought together. It was milking time.

The Danube flows through Austria and in protected areas wine is grown. The Austrians love their wine. The capital is Vienna and a quarter of the entire population lives there. Vienna is the waltz city. The waltz was made famous by the Strauss family in the 19th century and Johann Strauss is known as the waltz king. Vienna has a Spanish riding school. The Lipizzaners are known as "Vienna's dancing white horses". They train and perform at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, the only school in the world that has been practicing classical horsemanship for over 450 years. The Lipizzaners are so popular that there is even a Disney film about them. The whole population is music-friendly. In every village there is a trumpet group or other music groups and a choral society. A famous lake is the Wolfgangsee, where there is a café on which a song is played, “In the white Rössel at Lake Wolfgangsee”.
