End of year 'Thanks' ...

As 2024 draws to a close, a special THANK YOU goes out to Elly for assisting with the music every week! Also, thanks to the early birds who help me set-up the hall each week and thank you to all who attend every week and make our Exercise Class such a pleasant place to be.

Our last Class for the year will be on 2nd December, when we will celebrate the Christmas break with a morning tea; so kindly bring along a plate to share together.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas season and hope to see you all back again on 27th January 2025. Reminder: Enrolment day - Wednesday 15th January 2025.

As October is “Come and try” month, you are welcome to bring a friend to Exercises, to see if they would like to join our Class, to see how rewarding it is, to get regular exercise, working with a group.

To stay fit and healthy, and being physically active, helps you get the most out of life, whatever your age.

"Exercising to keep good balance helps to prevent falls ..."

As we age, our balance becomes a very important factor in our lives. It helps us to prevent falls.

Any activity that keeps us on our feet and moving can help us keep good balance. Walking is a safe exercise for most people and, in addition to improving balance, walking is a very pleasant activity, especially if we take a walk around our Benalla Lake.

And of course … there is also Exercises for Fun in the Seniors Auditorium every Monday from 9.30 - 11.00 am! See you there.

'Our marching segment has lots of benefits'

It has been so cold! Beginning the week at Exercises for Fun helps us to keep warm and start the week in good spirits.

As well as contributing to heart health and keeping us warm, marching improves balance and stability, a great benefit for older people. We have gradually increased the marching component of Exercises for Fun from 4 minutes up to 15 minutes. Congratulations everyone!

If you wish to join us for a bit of exercise on these cold mornings, we meet on Mondays from 9.30 to 11 am.

'Balance exercises are very good for you'

We all need to improve our balance to help prevent falls. It can be very challenging and rewarding to improve our balance.

As the year 2023 comes to a close, I would just like to thank Elly for supplying all the music and videos we use every week for our Class. Thank you, Elly.

Also a big thank you to Wilma for helping move the tables & chairs every week, and checking that the kitchen is left clean & tidy afterwards.

I would also like to thank all of you who attend Exercises for Fun every Monday and make it such a wonderful group to be connected with.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas Season, and hope to see you all back again in February.

It’s such a pleasure, to be part of our very committed group of energetic members, who have had a very successful year, attending the Exercise class, most Mondays of the year.
It’s good for the endorphins, so keep up the good work.

Our last Exercise class for the year will be on 27th Nov, when we celebrate the Christmas break, and bring along a plate, to share morning tea together.

October is 'Come and Try' month - we would love to see you!

Exercise is for everyone, regardless of shape or size.

You are more likely to stick to a routine, if you’re completing it with someone else. Come along and bring a friend to try out our Exercise Class, because the month of October is “Come and try” month.

A further update - no classes on the 21st and 28th August

20/8/2023

Exercises for Fun has joined a number of other classes not returning until September. Sadly, Helen has Covid and has had to cancel class on the 21st August. Hopefully Helen will recover quickly and be well enough to enjoy the well earned holiday she planned in late August, the reason for the class cancellation in the 28th August. All being well, classes will resume on Monday 4th September at 9.30am. Get well soon, Helen!

Helen is taking a well earned break to go on a 7-day trip in late August and has cancelled class on Monday 28th August.

Helen is telling members of the class about this change in sessions up till then and has arranged for Len to send out a reminder email.

The session has now been taken off the calendar on the website.

Classes will resume on Monday 4th September.

'Use it or lose it!...'

“Use it or lose it” certainly applies to our physical fitness as we get older,

Regular Exercise can improve our fitness and strength, and also reduce our risk of falls.

In our Class we are including a video, screened on the Auditorium wall, which gets us moving and is proving very popular.

As Winter is approaching, some of our members are slowly opting to travel to warmer climates, and our Class numbers are reducing.

Elly Smith, our Music Maker, has done a wonderful job organising our new tunes to use in our Class, including videos with new dance moves, and I thank her so sincerely.

All members are welcome to join us every Monday in the Seniors Hall at 9.30am sharp.

'Researching Exercise Ideas and Videos suitable for our group'

We have been doing some online research for different Exercise Ideas and Videos suitable for our group to try. It is challenging but enjoyable. There is nothing like a change to keep our minds and bodies active.

We meet every Monday at 9.30am in the auditorium of the Seniors Community Centre.

'Gentle to moderate activities that help us keep fit and healthy'

Our exercise class begins the week with gentle to moderate activities, that help us keep fit and healthy.

When a large number of members attend this class, we are considering the possibility of using a DVD that requires exercising “on the spot”, rather than performing the marching.

We start at 9.30am in the Seniors Hall every Monday. All welcome.

It is very exciting to know there are so many members out there with good intentions of including more exercise in their lives.

We have had extra good attendances at Exercises for Fun over this last month, which has created lots of noise and crowding, mainly during the Marching.

We are currently working on options such shortening the March where it is most congested. Hopefully we can sort something out, because we do want everyone who wants to do Exercises for Fun to enjoy the experience.

We meet every Monday, in the Seniors Hall, from 9.30am to 11.30am. Have fun.

Sad News - Mel Jeffree

27/12/2022

Mel Jeffree passed away on 2nd December in Benalla. Mel for three years organised the music for his wife Helen’s Exercises for Fun, which has been conducted on a Monday morning since 2018. Mel always had a great smile and a few words for all the participants of Exercises for Fun, and readily joined in the frivolities of being saluted by the group as they went through the marching exercises.

Due to ill health Mel has not been in charge of the music for the past 18 months. However, he did come to the Get Online lunch in October and enjoyed seeing everyone there.

Our sympathy is extended to Helen on her loss of Mel.

After a brief exercise class at the last session for 2022, the Class of 2022 sat down to share a sumptuous morning tea and a chat.

Lin took the opportunity to thank Helen for her dedication and enthusiasm over the past year, in spite of recent personal challenges.

About 'Exercises for Fun'

Research shows that there are many benefits of exercising with a group. Exercises can reduce the risk of falls and can increase our mobility, while maintaining our strength. It can improve our mood too.

Come along and join our Exercises for Fun group in the Seniors Hall and have fun!

Meeting Times

Exercises for Fun is held weekly in the main hall at the Benalla Senior Citizens Community Centre on Monday mornings from 9.30 to 11 am.
