Coming up on April 7th - Mt Pilot & Woolshed Falls, Chiltern

3/3/2021

'Bushwalking - Easy Walks - 1st Wednesday of the month, all day'

On Wednesday 7th April we will be climbing to the Mt Pilot summit, followed by lunch at Woolshed Falls.Mt Pilot and the Falls are two of three highlights in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park.

The walk commences at the intersection of C377(Beechworth-Chiltern Rd), and Old Coach Road. From here to the Mt Pilot picnic area is about 2.7km,with a further 300m to the summit lookout, for a total walk of about 6km.Poles/walking sticks are suggested for the final 300m as it can be steep in parts. There is a parking area along Old Coach Road for those wanting a shorter trek, but the road is well formed and easy to walk. The summit lookout provides a stunning panoramic view and is a must see, for those who feel safe to do so.

After conquering the summit, we will drive to the nearby  Woolshed Falls picnic area for lunch. The waterfalls and pools are close to the picnic area, for those with time to explore further.

Please confirm your attendance by Sunday 4th April with Julie McNeill 0407823031 or juliemcneill55@gmail.com, or Glen Chessells 0431201077 or gchess@hotmail.com. Remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, picnic lunch and a drink, and consider a walking stick or pole(s).

Meet at the Seniors’ Complex, Fawkner Dve carpark at 9am

Detailed direction to Mt Pilot and the Falls  will be provided at the car park.

If new members are unsure of their ability for these walks, please check with the above convenors.  Please also add convenors’ numbers to your mobile.

Car sharing is usually available, with a small contribution to costs.

"An enthusiastic group set off for Lake Sambell, Beechworth..."

3/3/2021

Wednesday 3rd March saw an enthusiastic group of nineteen amblers and ramblers setting off
for Beechworth’s Lake Sambell. It was great to see some new members in the group,

Everyone enjoyed a relaxed walk of about six kilometres along the Lake, then turning onto the
Murray-Mountains Trail and ending on the Gorge Road at Newtown Falls.  Despite the recent
lack of rain, the Falls made a lovely splashing backdrop to our walk along the Gorge Rd,and
members marvelled at the work of the miners who had dug and blasted their way through the
landscape in the gold era.

We looped around and returned via the sculpture trail, with members pacing out the labyrinth,
and enjoyed a picnic lunch by the Lake.

April’s Mt Pilot walk will be slightly more challenging, but equally enjoyable.

First photos of the Beechworth Walk....

Andi put together a great post on Facebook which included these photos. It surpassed our goal for number of likes for a Facebook post of 15, with 17 Likes at last viewing!

Andi noted that  that "Of that lovely Beechworth walk, the GPS says, "Having cut off the wandering at Sambell Lake for lunch, made the walk 5.9km. 1 hour 47 minutes.  Walking the labyrinth was about 114 metres. Not that my GPS is precise enough to show the pattern!
Andi spied  "Madman's Gully Road" in the lower right hand corner of the GPS mapping (below), commenting "What a great address!"  Julie responded "The Mayday Hills asylum was home to many of the old miners and migrants from the goldrushes--my great grandfather worked there all his life, and the family lived just up beyond Dingle Rd.My grandmother used to talk of the inmates wandering the area, and they would walk through the asylum grounds to get to town and school. I got the sense that many of them were perhaps demented or previously homeless."

    About Easywalks

Easywalks is a group for those who have enjoyed bushwalking in the past and for anyone interested in exploring the amazing tracks, trails and lookouts within about an hour's drive of Benalla.

Meeting monthly, the day will include a walk of about 8km, a picnic or cafe lunch and very often include sites of historical or botanical interest.

Participants should be able to walk at a reasonable pace on well defined tracks, without a lot of climbing. Sturdy shoes
are essential! You will also need to carry a small daypack with lunch, drinks etc as needed.

    Meeting times

1st Wednesday of the month from March.

Meeting times are usually at 9.30am, with the convenor notified of attendance three days prior.

We leave from the carpark behind the Seniors Complex (U3A), Fawckner Drive, Benalla.  Car sharing is usually available with a small cost.

Please note - Meeting times depend on the season and weather conditions or as determined by the walk leader.  Check the U3A Newsletter and confirm any details with the walk leader.
