The U3A Easy Walk in August was a nice ramble through Reef Hills. Some sunshine, no rain, and a brisk walk kept us warm. The wattles are just coming into flower, very beautiful
"An old mine now with a wet bottom. The rocks are an ancient mudstone, if I remember Rupe correctly."
"Green-hood orchids, found by a knowing navigator who had found them in that off-track spot before."
"Spiders? Aliens? The bush is wearing a mask?"
Six walkers enjoyed the fine weather and a good display of wildflowers in the Reef Hills. It has been a good year for this area, and particularly for wattles.
Starting from the Picnic Area, which is a concentrated centre for flowers, we walked up Tower road towards the Quarry before turning right down a bush track and viewing quite a deep mine shaft before meeting the Rifle Range road and then the Wattle road. This road has a very good display of purple flowered Rough Mint-bushes, particularly near a low section of the track. We turned left here and walked the straight road to the hill where the fire-watch tower used to be. Down the hill to the Tower road and left then right on a bush track which has a line of mines including “The Lion” and leads down to “Wrangler’s Gully”, and the alluvial diggings, uphill from here to the Quarry and back to the cars. We were lucky to find a few Flying duck orchids flowering.
They are very small – about 2 cm, but quite spectacular. Also, after lunch, we drove to Baines road to see a small display of Tiger Orchids.
There are no more walks this year. Easy walks will start again in April.
Thank you for your work and help over the year, and have a good Christmas,
Easy Walks are aimed at maintaining fitness by introducing people to bushwalking and giving previous bushwalkers the opportunity to continue bushwalking on shorter, easier and well defined tracks. Walks will
be approximately 5 - 7 kms without a lot of climbing, usually within an hour’s drive of Benalla. Participants will require sturdy shoes & be able to carry a backpack containing snack, lunch, adequate water, water-proof jacket, and personal items. Members are asked to notify walk leaders of
attendance at least 3 days prior to the walk to enable carpooling, travel costs, and other arrangements.
1st Wednesday - 9:00/10:00 start - All Day - from March
Easy Walks are held on the first Wednesday of the month recommenc-ing in March 2021 and leave from the carpark behind the Seniors Complex (U3A), Fawckner Drive, Benalla. Meeting times are usually around 9-10am depending on the season and weather conditions or as deter-mined by the walk leader. Check the monthly U3A Newsletter and confirm any details with the walk leader.
