Winton Wetlands #2 - 5 August...  'the final interim Easy Walk'...

8/8/2020

Photographs:  Wendy Sturgess
The final interim Easy Walk was attended by 7 energetic walkers on Wednesday 5 August 2020.

We walked from the truck stop on Old Sydney Road to the Yarrawonga Road near the DK Henderson factory then returned--a distance of approximately 7 kms. This area is full of bird life and native bushes and has been well regenerated to preserve the creek banks which have significant erosion.

The wattle is just coming into its full glory.  Part of the route followed the railway line and also went past the concrete cast plant.  This is the trail which connects Benalla to the Winton dam wall and then onto the Mokoan Hub.  We were lucky that despite a very cold start to the day and an earlier cool wind, it was pleasant enough for the walk.

As a result of the tightening of the COVID-19 restrictions from 6 August, this will be the last Easy Walk until possibly mid-September.  Please keep up to date on the website for notification of the next walk when restrictions ease.

Stage 3 Restrictions - Winton Wetlands Walk is on this week!

3/8/2020

It's on!  Wednesday 5 August 2020 - Winton Wetlands #2
We just made it before the Stage 3 restrictions are introduced!  On Wednesday, 5 August ‘20 (1st Wednesday) the plan is to walk another part of the Winton Wetlands Trail, this time from Benalla out to the Yarrawonga Road. Meet at Seniors/U3A carpark 9.45am for departure at 10.00 am.   As mentioned in the July newsletter, members were asked to notify Wendy Sturgess on 0403226649 or to email her on wendes47@bigpond.com no later than Friday 31 July if they plan to attend as there will be a limit on numbers.

To be rescheduled!  Reef Hills Walk
The Reef Hills walk proposed for Wednesday 19 August will be rescheduled to adhere to Stage 3 Covid-19 restrictions applying from Thursday 6 August.  Reef Hills, part of the gold rush era, was worked for reef and alluvial gold and proclaimed a State Park in 2002.  Hopefully COVID-19 will allow us to visit this area later in Spring to enjoy the wildflowers.

Please keep an eye on emails, the newsletter and the website for updates.  Margaret Walshe ph: 5762 3906/ 0427005202 or mwalshe20@gmail.com .

    About Easy Walks

Easy Walks are aimed at maintaining fitness by introducing people to bushwalking and giving previous bushwalkers the opportunity to continue bushwalking on shorter, easier and well defined tracks. Walks will
be approximately 5 - 7 kms without a lot of climbing, usually within an hour’s drive of Benalla. Participants will require sturdy shoes & be able to carry a backpack containing snack, lunch, adequate water, water-proof jacket, and personal items. Members are asked to notify walk leaders of
attendance at least 3 days prior to the walk to enable carpooling, travel costs, and other arrangements.

    Meeting times

    1st Wednesday - 9:00/10:00 start - All Day - from March
Easy Walks are held on the first Wednesday of the month
recommenc-ing in March 2021 and leave from the carpark behind the Seniors Complex (U3A), Fawckner Drive, Benalla.  Meeting times are usually around 9-10am depending on the season and weather conditions or as deter-mined by the walk leader.  Check the monthly U3A Newsletter and confirm any details with the walk leader.
