President Margaret Jenkins presented a Life Membership Award to Terry Case at the 2023 Annual General Meeting: "I would like to thank Terry Case for his outstanding contribution to U3A Benalla over many years. Terry was President from 2014 to 2017, past President from 2017 to 2021, Convenor of both Politics and Current Affairs and Australian History courses each for over 10 years, and a great supporter of U3A Benalla. For his outstanding contribution, the Committee have decided to award him Life Membership of U3A Benalla." In his response, Terry affirmed the important part U3A plays in the life of its members. He also reminded us that this role still retains importance to members when it becomes more difficult for them to continue at a level they had formerly managed with ease.
Beverley Lee Web Manager U3A Benalla member Judith Borthwick worked with John Avery at Dookie Agricultural College for many years and later edited the U3A Benalla Newsletter during much of John’s incumbency as U3A Benalla’s President. Judith searched the old newsletter files on her computer for a photo and article she remembered being sent to the Ensign at the time of John receiving his Life Membership award in 2012. She was delighted to find them and be able to share them in this newsletter. As Judith commented, John’s excitement and pleasure in receiving the award is clearly evident in the photograph.  “At U3A’s annual Christmas function held at Whitfield on 28th November (2012), a delighted and surprised John Avery was presented with a Life Membership Award and an Outstanding Service Certificate for his outstanding service in fostering the aims and objectives of U3A in Benalla Rural City.
In congratulating John, President Geraldine McCorkell stated that this award is not given lightly, John is the first person to receive such an award in the club’s 20-year existence, and it is well deserved. John was president of U3A Benalla for seven years and it is due his tireless efforts that the club has grown and is in a sound financial position. Congratulations to our two new life members Joyce Borschmann & Vaughan Cowan who were presented with life membership badges at the Annual General Meeting on the 20th March this year. Joyce & her husband Bob started the Singing for Fun group and Joyce has been the convener from the start till last year. Over the years the singers have gone from strength to strength and have become one of the most popular groups.  Vaughan has likewise led the Bush Walking groups for 16 plus years. It is always great to see the photos of smiling faces and wonderful scenery on our website and Facebook page.  Both Joyce and Vaughan started with U3A in 1996 & after U3A closed down took up their roles when U3A reformed in 2002.
Dorothy Webber  Louise Doddrell, pictured above with life member John Avery, was presented with a life membership at Wine Appreciation's 21st Anniversary. The event was celebrated at Gracebrook Winery, with many members present to recognize and celebrate Louise's contribution as founding convenor of the Wine Appreciation Group in 1997 to 2013.
