Advanced Care Planning 2 session report

4/12/2018

This session, presented on Friday 30th November 2018 to 33 U3A participants, was the second in the series on Advanced Care Planning.

Brendan Smith From Smith Dosser Accountants/Financial Planners, outlined and provided a copy of a framework for consideration of retirement and end of life issues.

Damian Feehan from N J Todd Funeral Directors discussed the roles and responsibilities of funeral agencies and the need to preplan and communicate preferences prior to this stage of life.

Jo O’Brien and April Betheras from the Palliative Care Service outlined their roles and once again emphasised the need for people to record their care options/choices under certain scenarios when they are actively able to consider them.  They outlined how this can help care givers and families at a time when communication becomes impossible.

Advanced Care Planning 2, Friday 30 November, 9.30 - 12 noon

29/9/2018

Following a successful session on Advanced Care Planning in October 2017 and requests from members, U3A Benalla is offering a single session course, Advanced Care Planning 2, on Friday 30 November between 9.30 am and 12 noon in the U3A Room at the Benalla Senior Citizens Community Centre.

The session is designed to continue the conversation with professionals regarding pre determined care options, enabling people to better communicate their wishes with family and allied professionals. The  course is being offered in conjunction with Damian Feehan, Funeral Director, N.J.Todd; Brendan Smith, Smith Dosser Accountants; and Benalla Health’s Palliative Care and Loss and Grief Counselling services.

Enquiries regarding the session may be made by contacting Margaret Walshe on 5762 3906 or email [email protected]

'Advanced Care Planning - Starting the Conversation'

20/10/2017

A great follow up to U3A Legal Matters sessions. Advanced Care Planning can be a confronting subject but was made comfortable, acceptable and necessary by the presenters: Deb Smith, Community Health Nurse, Benalla Health; Chris Thorne, Aboriginal Support Worker, Central Hume Primary Care Partnership and April Betheras, Loss and Grief Counsellor, Benalla Health.

Advanced Care Planning is not only for the older person! Do you know the pre-determined Care Options for younger family members if they were unable to communicate their wishes to family and health care professionals?

The Benalla Health Advanced Care Planning Information Package provided valuable information: The Process ACDC - Appoint, Communicate, Document, Circulate; Enduring Power of Attorney (Medical Treatment); Advanced Care Planning Information Sheet; Letter to your Doctor plus related web sites.
Two informative videos were shown, the first, “Taking Care of Dying Time”, featuring Chris Thorne, was filmed in Benalla Aboriginal Garden.

The second video titled “In the End” with Dr Charlie Corke, was filmed in the Intensive Care Unit, Barwon Health with families addressing possible medical options and outcomes concerning their loved ones.
The program was well presented and thought provoking as well as covering decision making tools - what is right for you; providing relevant information in handouts and including discussion on a possible future associated session.

The Importance of Advance Care Planning

8/6/2017

U3A members Margaret Walshe and Margaret Jenkins recently attended an Advance Care Planning seminar involving members of the Palliative Care team from Benalla Health.  They reported back that the session was excellent and are recommending that we consider adding it as a special session, perhaps as a third session in a 'Legal Matters' series (the first two sessions, to be presented by John Barry, have already been timetabled).

Margaret Walshe explained that a video had been shown developed by Chris Thorne and Lisa Guppy from Benalla's Primary Care Partnership.  Marg highly recommends this for all to see and has sent us the link so that members can view the video.
