July report

29/7/2016

Our recent Convenors ’ meeting provided the opportunity to discuss future plans; to distribute the U3A Tutors’ Handbook and our Convenors’ A-Z; to share stories about the strengths of our groups and to discuss problems faced when numbers fall. Nearly all convenors spoke with great warmth about their groups, however two groups have experienced falling numbers and a third appears to be re-building.

It is hard on tutors who put in effort preparing material if class members don’t turn up. It is better to let us know if you are going to be absent for a while or that you are going to drop out of a class. Please don’t leave us guessing as to your well-being or whereabouts.

I want to thank Mike Larkin who has run Comparative Religion for the past year and a half for his efforts. Unfortunately the course will soon cease. Elspeth Maconachie’s Brain Games is under similar pressure.

Most of our courses are, however, doing well despite the winter weather and the failure of one of our heaters/air conditioner. Both units are to be serviced and make W4 more hospitable. Enjoy the rest of your winter courses!

Vale

Jan Casey 2-11-1937 – 18-7-2016
A large contingent recently gathered at the Moorngag Cemetery to farewell Jan and support her family. Jan was a pharmacist, initially one of the few women qualified for such work. An ex colleague spoke of her professionalism and how pleasant it was to work with her. Jan enjoyed volunteering in a number of organizations and will be missed by her many friends. James certainly has our sympathy and support.

Denzil Mortimer 11-10-1929 – 14-4-2016
I was recently informed that Denzil Mortimer had died. Denzil was mentioned at the July Meet & Mingle when a 50s news reel featured his onetime doubles partner. He was a talented player, known to many of you as a Science Teacher at the High School and more recently as our Music Appreciation tutor.

June message

4/7/2016

Despite the cold weather we had a good turn-out for the June Meet & Mingle when Carol & Godfrey displayed some of the many flags used in Canada and its provinces.  Comparing our state flags it seems the Canadians had a bit more flair when it came to flag designs!

John Barry’s two sessions of Legal Matters were quickly filled and have been a great success.  John is an informative and entertaining speaker who explained legal complexities and entertained with his anecdotes.  I have asked John to do a guest spot in one of our Armchair History classes to look at law through an historical perspective and hope we can entice him to run a few more sessions next year.  Thanks John!

I would like to remind members that John and the ANZAC Commemorative Working Party have a regular column in the Benalla Ensign. The recent topic was the promise by the Prime Minister Billy Hughes to send a draft of 50,000 troops in June 1916 followed by monthly drafts of 9,500 men per month. This would lead to one of the greatly divisive issues of the period, Conscription.
Whilst we do not have a tutor for Australian History the Ensign column is a good way of reviewing this period, together with its local news from the time it gives a glimpse of the previous century.

Can I remind you that if you are going to be absent from classes it would be appreciated if you would inform your tutor. This is the time of year when many people suffer from colds and some travel north. Tutors put in a lot of work to run classes and they can be left wondering if it is worthwhile when class sizes drop and they get no feedback.
