Guest speaker at our April Meet and Mingle was Jane Taylor, Volunteer Development Coordinator with Benalla Rural City Jane gave a very interesting talk about her position and what she does. She commented on the need for Police Checks and Working with Children checks for some volunteers. Jane also covered aspects of insurance for volunteers.
Meet and Mingle followed our AGM. Guest speaker was U3A member and glider pilot Claire Rudolph who spoke of her experiences as a pilot and kept us all amused and enthralled. Many thanks Claire. Our first Meet and Mingle for 2017 was very well attended. After some announcements a slide presentation was shown of items shown at last year’s Collectors. This was previously shown at a meeting of Collectors in September last year and has been well received on both occasions. Judging by the noise level during morning tea many members were pleased to have an opportunity to catch up with friends they had not seen during the summer recess.
Our next Meet and Mingle will be held in W4 at the Flexible Learning Centre on 15th March and will include the Annual General Meeting. Following the AGM Our guest speaker, Claire Rudolph, will set the scene for Friday’s Chat ‘N Chew lunch at the Gliding Club. An experienced glider pilot and long term member of the Benalla Gliding Club, Claire will speak and answer questions about gliding, her experiences as a glider pilot and the recent world gliding championships in Benalla. The last Meet and Mingle for 2016 was held at The Senior Citizens Centre on November 16th. The meeting went well with a display of quilts and patchwork by members of the Patchwork group and entertainment provided by the Singing for Fun group. ![]() (For more photos, to the the Patchwork or Singing for Fun pages).
Pat Claridge from the Tomorrow, Today Foundation was guest speaker at our October meeting. Pat outlined just some of the programs that the Foundation runs leaving the audience overwhelmed by the range of programs running to assist children from preschool to secondary level. The aim of one program is to have children ready for school while another coaches older students on how to present at interviews. This was a very informative and enjoyable session. Pat then joined the group for morning tea and talked too many of those present who had further questions. Thank you Pat. Our last Meet and Mingle for 2016 will be held at The Senior Citizens Centre on November 16th at 10.00 am.
Members of the Patchwork group will have quilts and patchwork on display and we will be entertained by the Singing for Fun group. Morning tea will be served. All welcome Chris Gill from the Sentencing Advisory Council presented our session in September. The case which we were asked to judge was about a young man who was charged with arson as well as other crimes committed during a robbery. Most of our members agreed with the judges verdict of guilty and also with the sentence, especially when we heard that the perpetrator had already been charged with 19 other crimes. This was a very informative session and gave us a little insight into sentencing and what the judge has to take into account. Guest speaker at our next session on 19th October will be Pat Claridge from the Tomorrow, Today Foundation
U3A member Neville Gibb was our guest speaker in August. Neville took us on a very enjoyable tour of London and we each had a map of the London Underground rail system which we could follow as Neville took us from place to place. Our collective travel bug was well and truly awakened as Neville spoke of London which is full of history and has such a lot to offer the tourist. . Students from the Flexible Learning Centre who are doing the Barista Course provided tea, coffee or hot chocolate for morning tea At our September Meet and Mingle to be held on September 21st the guest speaker will be Chris Gill from the Sentencing Advisory Council who will present a session called ‘You be the Judge’. In the session details of an actual crime will be given and we will be the judge. Following our deliberations Chris will reveal whether the person was found guilty or not and the reasons why. A similar session to this was held several years ago but this session will involve an entirely different crime.
Beth Smith, a dairy farmer from Tatong, spoke at our July meeting. Beth explained some of the difficulties dairy farmers are currently facing with low milk prices and dairy companies demanding they pay back money they have been paid. Many dairy farmers have already spent that money doing improvements to their farms and will now be forced to borrow to pay this money back to Fonterra. Despite the difficulties Beth seemed positive about life as a dairy farmer. Lorraine and Beth at Meet and Mingle
Neville Gibb will be guest speaker at the next Meet and Mingle on the 17th August. His topic will be London – 1000 villages. ![]() Carole and Godfrey Marple gave a fascinating presentation on their collection of flags at June’s Meet and Mingle. Godfrey explained how he and Carole came to be collectors of flags and described the ways in which they involve the community in celebrating the flags of different nations. Godfrey and Dorothy then held up a selection of flags from Canada, Australia and New Zealand while Carole provided information about their history and cultural relevance. Flags certainly provide a thought provoking lens through which to consider the history and culture of nations throughout the world. The next Meet and Mingle is scheduled for 20th July at 10 am in W4. Beth Smith and her daughter Kate, dairy farmers from Tatong, will share their perspective on the current situation in the dairy industry and discuss its effects on their livelihood. Morning tea at Meet and Mingle was this month provided by students’ from the Flexible Learning Centre who are doing a Barista course. They served cappuccino, flat whites, long blacks and tea. A big thank you to those concerned.
We also had a quiz with pen and pencil provided. No-one got all 20 questions correct, but it provided some thought provoking fun and reminded some of us to brush up on our general knowledge in case there is another quiz at future meetings. Following this Terry showed some very old sections of early movies. The one of Ned Kelly was badly damaged but was all that could be salvaged from a much earlier era. Another showing scenes from early Melbourne provided much comment as members recognised buildings and commented on the fashions of the time. A picture of a train at Richmond station with Dimmy’s building in the background provided much interest. Jane Parris was the guest speaker at our last Meet and Mingle. She spoke about the trip she and Bill made to Turkey as part of a group of Rotarians in 2015. They were accommodated with Turkish Rotarians where possible and so learnt more about the people and saw areas of Turkey which they might not have otherwise seen.
In Turkey for Anzac Day, they did not go to the Anzac Cove service but instead attended a very moving service some distance away in Gallipoli with about 2000 people. Jane had some beautiful photos of her trip and has fond memories of Turkey and its people. Thank you Jane it was a thoroughly enjoyable presentation. Our next Meet and Mingle will be held on 18th May. The U3A Benalla and District 2016 Annual General Meeting was held during the Meet and Mingle session in March. Laurie Webber officiated during the election process. Current members of the executive were reinstated with the addition of Dorothy Webber as Vice-President and Judith Borthwick as Publicity Officer. Terry Case's thought provoking President's report (refer Page 1) was followed by general discussion and morning tea.
At our April Meet and Mingle Jane and Bill Parris will be presenting on their trip to Turkey and the service they attended at Gallipoli in April 2015. The first Meet and Mingle meeting with Bill Sykes as guest speaker was well attended.
Terry has provided more information in his President’s report at the beginning of the Newsletter. A very enjoyable Meet and Mingle was held this morning at The Hub, Cooinda. The Singing for Fun group entertained us with a range of songs. The three sessions were conducted by Brian Greed, Faith Hicks and Margaret Merriman. U3A members were greatly appreciative of the music and appreciate the practise involved to get to their high standard. Many quilts were displayed by the Patchwork group and these colourful and skilfully made quilts caused a lot of comment. Singing for Fun group at the U3A November meeting at The Hub, Cooinda. President Terry Case thanks the members of the Singing for Fun Group and the patchworkers for a very enjoyable morning. He estimated that there were about 110 people present which represented half of our U3A Benalla members. A varied and most enjoyable program was performed and the ‘Vegemite song’ which many of us remembered from days gone by brought a smile to our faces. A very nice morning tea was served after the first session conducted by Brian Greed and this was followed by two more segments conducted by Faith Hicks and Marg Merriman. Our October Meet and Mingle took place at the Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Learning Centre - with presentations from Councillor Barbara Alexander on directions being taken by the council to ensure Benalla remains a vibrant town which is attractive to older people and from librarian Debbie on upcoming and regular programs in the Library.
Terry Case reported on recent developments, then congratulated the Investment 1 group, which has decided to finish up this year after running as a U3A group since 1996. Seven of the original members are still attending this group, which as 'Ben-ites' is a regular leader in the Age Share Race. Graham Mitchell engaged the audience in reminiscing about the group and received very warm applause in recognition of his contribution as convenor of this long running and most successful group. Next year's new 'Play reading' and 'Collectors' Corner' groups were advertised by respective group leaders, Keith Rogers and Judy Borthwick. Our last Meet and Mingle for the year will be held at The Hub, Cooinda on Wednesday 18th November. Please try to car pool, and give yourselves time to be at the venue for a 10 am start. Patchwork will be on display and the Singing for Fun group will entertain us. |
Meet and MingleAt the beginning of each Meet and Mingle, news from the U3A Benalla Committee meeting held the previous week will be shared with those attending. A cup of tea or coffee and a chat with the guest speaker and other members will complete the morning. Convenor and Contact detailsMargaret Jenkins
