'Good Vibrations'

23/10/2017

There are many sorts of good vibrations.  There is the song by the Beach Boys released in the 1960s.  There is the feeling we get when we see something that appeals.  There is the vibration from music itself.  There are vibrations caused by heavy footsteps, or heavy traffic around us.  Perhaps there are also not so good vibrations like earthquakes and volcanoes.  But I do not want to write about the bad vibrations.

There are two areas of vibration that have affected our lives.  The one to talk about this time is music.  Music seems to have played a large role in our lives.  When a young mum, we always had cassettes playing.  Living in Canberra with an active toddler, we decided rather than barricade the cassette player, we would teach him how to handle the cassettes.  Before he was two years old, he could place a cassette in the machine and turn it on.  It is only in writing this that I realise that his interest in music started so early in his life has extended into his adult years.

Matthew wanted to learn to play the guitar quite young.  The guitar teacher we originally found for him declined to teach him so young, and he then asked to learn singing.  Not a problem, and the singing teacher also taught him some basic keyboard – we had an electronic organ at home and so he was able to practice both key board and singing.  Eventually he also started learning the guitar, and became a very talented guitar player.  When he went to sea as an officer cadet, he always took his guitar with him.  He works on a “fly in fly out” basis, and has top quality guitars in both of his “homes”.  When at home, he still tries to have guitar lessons – you can never stop learning!  He has a top-quality music system in his family home, and has started collecting vinyl to play as well.  There is always music in the home, with both his children also playing instruments – guitar, and, wait for it…drums – lots of vibrations.

The vibrations of music passed on differently to our daughter.  She has been a dancer since she was three years old.  While listening to music is essential, feel (vibrations) are an important part of the work.  As an adult, with children, she still occasionally goes to classes, and fills in as a ballet teacher.  Her husband has a huge collection of music, and both children have had lessons.  Her son has been accepted into the special music program at the High School he will attend in 2018.

Music is still important in our lives.  Additional speakers for our own music system has resulted in our having classic music throughout the house for much of every day.  My husband still enjoys playing his wooden flute, and plays with a local group on occasion.  We have had practices in our home, and I enjoy the “live concert” from our lounge room.  The piano takes pride of place in our home, as well as other instruments.

Our music provides our home with good vibrations.
