“They've given me an awful lot, and I'm so deeply fond of them, and I love spending time with them, so I'll keep going for a very, very long time, I promise everybody that."
This was a quote from Richard Osman, who has written some gentle mysteries. He was talking about the characters in the books. This led to a discussion about the value of getting to know the characters included in our stories. Defining their personality and physical characteristics can help in writing their story even if these are not actually included in the story. For example, deciding their age can help in working out how they would act in a story.
Our stories:
As usual we shared our stories. It was interesting that a few of the stories were not complete, leaving completion as a possible writing activity during the U3A break.
After feedback and discussion around writing, we went to the North Eastern pub for pre-Christmas drinks.
Writing in January:
We will be keeping our writing going over the U3A break. No prompts for this. Instead each person has a set of four cards. Each set had a female character, a male character, a place and an activity. The challenge is to write something incorporating each of these. We will share our stories around the second week of January for feedback. It is possible that we could use this feedback to revise our story for sharing during the February 2024 class.
And of course those who had started a story, could look at finishing the story to share either in January or at our February class.
