Elizabeth is now historically regarded as the founder of the wool industry in Australia. Her husband, John, lived in exile in England for 16 years after being a key instigator in the revolt deposing Governor William Bligh. During this time Elizabeth expanded and improved their flocks while John negotiated for more land and promoted the sale of fine wool to the English woolen mills.
Grenville warns readers she doesn’t stick strictly to facts as she invents an affair between Elizabeth and the Colonial Astronomer, Mr Dawes. However the novel provides accurate descriptions of life in the new colony of NSW: the struggles in the first two years of settlement and her life at Elizabeth Farm at Parramatta.
A good read for all who enjoy historical novels.
