Our meetings during November have been focussed on fine tuning of the songs which we are presenting at Meet and Mingle on Wednesday 15 November at 10am. The variety of songs chosen by our leaders Faith Hicks, Brian Greed and Margaret Merriman should provide a great concert. Gwen Barnes has been providing excellent assistance on the piano.
We have also been singing extra songs during our Thursday morning meetings. Faith has chosen some rounds while Margaret has included many requests from the Singing for Fun members.
Brian had a great approach with him playing the piano for a Sing-along at the Harmony group. Members really enjoyed the variety of songs which included “The Saints Go Marching In” and “K-K-Katie”.
Our sing out at the Alice Goulding Wing at Cooinda is on Thursday 7 December. Members are asked to be at Cooinda by 10.15am. To celebrate the end of a great year we are having our end of year lunch at the Golf Club after our Cooinda performance. Please contact Joyce Borschmann if you want to go and have not put your name down already.
Members of the Singing for Fun group are looking forward to their concert which will be held at the November Meet and Mingle on Wednesday 15 November at 10am in the main hall at the Seniors Centre. Friends and family of U3A members are very welcome. The patchworkers will also be displaying their quilts, which will provide another interesting facet to the morning.
Our three leaders, Faith Hicks, Margaret Merriman and Brian Greed have been polishing up the songs which we will present, and the presentation will show plenty of variety.
Joyce Borschmann welcomed Jeanne Beale to our first meeting in October. We hope Jeanne will become a regular member of our group.
As part of the Benalla Festival, the Australian Welsh Male Choir is performing at the Swanpool and District Memorial Hall on Sunday 12th November from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Afternoon tea will be provided. Tickets at $25 may be obtained from the Amcal Max Pharmacy in Bridge Street Benalla. Come along and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.
Joyce Borschmann welcomed back Marjorie and Doug Geeson after three months in New South Wales at the Harmony meeting in September. Unfortunately the number of sopranos at Harmony was depleted due to various members being unwell. We hope to see them back very soon.
Faith Hicks introduced us to “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’” which appeared to be enjoyed by all.
Members are reminded that there are not very many weeks until our concert which will be on Wednesday 15th November 2017 at Meet and Mingle. So it would be great if everyone could attend all our October meetings.
The next meeting of Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 5th October at 10am in the U3A room at the Seniors Centre.
Singing for Fun is happily settling into its new home in the U3A room at the Seniors Community Centre. Our numbers have been slightly down during the past two months due to a few members migrating to warmer areas on holidays.
We have also missed Gwen Cheetham one of our sopranos who has been unwell for several weeks. We hope to see you back soon Gwen.
The next meeting of Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 7 September 2017 at 10am in the U3A room at the Seniors Community Centre.
Joyce Borschmann’s Singing for Fun group had the privilege of being the first general session conducted in the U3A room at the Seniors Community Centre on Thursday 6 July 2017. A rousing rendition of “Seventy-Six Trombones” conducted by Brian Greed commenced what will hopefully be a very pleasant singing experience for our members.
During the same session we also enjoyed some community singing conducted by Faith Hicks.
Our piano has made the move successfully as shown by the skills of our pianist Gwen Barnes.
The first meeting of the Harmony group in the new room produced some great harmony particularly in the rendition of “Sweet and Low” chosen by Margaret Merriman. The ability of the Harmony group to blend together appears to be improving month by month.
The next meeting of the Singing for Fun Group will be in the U3A room on Thursday 3 August 2017 at 10am.
This past month has seen our last meetings of both Singing for Fun and the Harmony Group in the Baptist Church in Bridge Street Benalla. The Baptist Church has provided suitable accommodation for six years.
All Singing for Fun and Harmony meetings from July 2017 will be in the U3A Room at the Benalla Rural City Seniors Complex in Fawckner Drive Benalla. Enter by the side door which is in the car port. During this past month Faith Hicks continued her revival of some of the first songs that the Singing for Fun group sang. More than half of the group had good memories of these English, Scottish and Irish sing-a-long songs.
Margaret Merriman introduced the group to the ”Hippopotamus Song”, the chorus of which was well known. However, some members had not heard the quirky words of the verses which contribute to a more interesting rendition of the song.
Two songs which we had not sung before, namely “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” and “Istanbul” (not “Constantinople”) were introduced to us by Brian Greed this month. Both songs were enthusiastically enjoyed by the group. Gwen Barnes our pianist is ever patient with the group, often suggesting small improvements which can be made.
Spontaneous singing provides highlights to special events. Such was the singing of “For he’s a jolly good fellow” when the group were told of member Ken Whan being awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this year. Congratulations Ken.
The next meeting of Singing for Fun will be held on Thursday 6th. July 2017 in the U3A Room of Benalla Rural City Seniors Complex in Fawckner Drive Benalla at 10am. Come and see and enjoy our new facility.
(Please note that the information on page 11 of the Newsletter is rather confusing - Singing for Fun is to be held on Thursday 6th at 10 am. Please use the information in the Newsletter Report itself and given here).
