Special ReportĀ from Investment Group 1

24/11/2015

Our report this month is tinged with a note of sadness but more especially a feeling of pride that this dedicated group can boast of a great history of achievement and fellowship.

Nineteen years ago in 1996 before the Benalla U3A began, an enthusiastic group of like-minded people decided to form an Investment group to research and hone their skills studying the Australian share market.

It began its activities under the auspices of “The National Seniors” movement and met in the old Presbyterian Hall under the leadership of Mr Graham Mitchell. The group comprised 10 foundation members of whom 7 are still regularly in attendance at the meetings. Graham has continued in the role of convenor of the group for the entire period of 19 years and the numbers remain at 10 with the later addition of 2 new members.

At the commencement of activities the use of computers was not general within the group which depended on data gained from investment journals and other sources. Over the years members have become a highly skilled group using sophisticated computer programmes in their research. In more recent times the group has been regularly invited to be a contestant in the “Shares Race” competition under the name “U3A Benites” conducted by the Sunday Age newspaper enjoying and achieving some success by winning the competition on several occasions. At its most recent meeting we were pleased to welcome a visitor, who on one occasion ran 2nd to our group and travelled from Melbourne especially to meet our members.

The group believes its continued success can be attributed to the leadership of Graham Mitchell, A unique meeting format and good fellowship.

Unfortunately the Investment group has reached the stage when it must close down its activities owing to the seniority of most of the members who are in their 80s and 90s and one key member is moving from Benalla.

Happily the formal closure of our meetings will in no way change the bonds of friendship and fellowship so deeply forged over the last 19 years.

Recent stock market 'no place for the faint hearted'

27/10/2015

At our recent meeting members present very much enjoyed the usual format which has proved so successful and enduring over many years. It was agreed that the recent vagaries of the stock market is no place for the faint hearted!

It is expected that the report for Investment Group No 1 next month will be somewhat different in content.

Global turmoil in the share market in August

20/9/2015

Our August meeting was a first in one respect in that of all the individual Companies submitted by each member only one member’s selection managed to achieve a rise in price!

This happening strongly supported the expectation that August was always going to reflect the global turmoil which in truth proved to be somewhat chaotic.

Those people interested in the share market are forever optimistic so hopes are high for better results next month!

'Another pleasing win!'

25/8/2015

Another pleasing win for our group in the Sunday Age Share competition as published in the Sunday Age on the 26th July. At our July meeting following the usual assessment of individual Stocks submitted by each member an interesting exchange of views took place on the investing experiences of each member.

'Picking the Spec' andĀ our end of financial year lunch

19/6/2015

At last months meeting of our group, the monthly exercise and friendly competition "Pick the spec" which is conducted by one of our experienced members attracted the usual keen interest. This segment provides our members with the opportunity to select a "Spec Stock" which shows the best price improvement for the month. While all members score an occasional win there are some who exhibit consistent skill in this elusive search for the monthly best!

Immediately following our June meeting our members will be having lunch together with any partners wishing to attend to celebrate the approaching end of the financial year!

Chalking up another win in the Sunday Age Share Race!

25/5/2015

Members of Investment Group No1 enjoyed a stimulating previous meeting with interesting discussion on many aspects of successful investing technique.

The group was also pleased to chalk up another win in “The Sunday Age Share Race” competition.

March - using Comsec's research tools and more

31/3/2015

At our last meeting following the regular format two of our members gave an interesting and instructive presentation on how to obtain the best use of the research tools in the ComSec Website. During the meeting the convenor also provided members of our group with the opportunity of viewing on the screen the progress of any Company they wished to research.

From the February newsletter

28/2/2015

At the time of printing our Group will have met for our first meeting in 2015 which will have been Tuesday 20th January. Our members will have had the opportunity to reflect and speculate on where our markets will take us in the coming year. The stock market has not given us many pointers over the holiday period owing to the usual torpor associated with the “Silly Season” apart from fluctuation within a moderate band! Fund managers and analysts are as always divided so no doubt our members will again enjoy the exercise of being involved in their own research and of sharing knowledge! The year is off to a good start for Investment Group No 1 as we get back to our usual agenda.

Apart from our normal programme where we discuss the stocks submitted each month for analysis plus our competition to find the best performing Spec Stock our members value and enjoy the fellowship associated with each meeting.

2014 - "a happy year of fellowship and mutual learning"

25/1/2015

Members of our group are thankful to look back on a happy year of fellowship and mutual learning both as a group and individually from each other. We have appreciated the opportunity to study the various aspects of the share market and have enjoyed our involvement as competitors in the “Share Race” competition which is conducted by The Age newspaper.

Following our December meeting we celebrated a successful year with a Christmas lunch at the Golf Club.
