This month we tackled Part 2 of the introductory session. The purpose of this session is to introduce participants to some of the key concepts used in Psychology. Once completed, participants are eligible to join the Psychology Discussion Group. We revisited evaluation tools used in psychology and in other disciplines - for example, a Pre and Post Evaluation tool. This simple and effective tool has many functions, one is to assess the soundness of a tutor's (U3A Convenor's) session content design and group discussions. If a course group initially reports low confidence in a topic and completes the term with the same low level of confidence, then the course content and delivery warrants review. We also considered:
April's topic will be "The Making of a Donald Trump" - an interesting look at aspects of his childhood and his current travels toward, possibly, the next USA presidency. Spoiler - there is no definitive recipe. NEXT Meeting - Tuesday 16 April 10:00am - 12:00 pm U3A Meeting Room 2. Jane A warm welcome to new enrolments, and welcome back to 2023 participants. This
structured five session program is a pre-requisite for the Demystifying Psychology Discussion Group. The first session was, as promised, information dense and not likely to be covered in one session. The course invites a light-hearted look at some of the many psychological theories and terms that try to offer an understanding of how and why all sorts of relationships play out in every-day life. So far, we have looked at concepts of:
At the next meeting we will look at:
Looking forward to the next catch up …Tuesday 19 March 10:00am - 12 noon at U3A large room at Benalla Seniors building. Jane 0437 621 575 Greetings Everyone and all the best for an interesting and enjoyable 2024. Sessions will be held monthly on the 3rd Tuesday beginning Tuesday 20th February from 10:00am to 12:00pm in U3A Room 1 in the Benalla Seniors Building in Fawckner Street, Benalla. Following sessions will be held on March 19th, April16th, May 21st, and June 18th. Expect session #1 to be a bit information dense. You will be introduced to some frequently used concepts and engage in two “hands-on” activities – (1) pre and post testing, and (2) completing a personality type inventory (see below). The good news is these activities are homework assignments to complete and bring to session #1. (I can hear groaning … “Homework!!). Emails containing details for your homework have been sent to each group member. Contact me if you have not received the email (reminder: check your spam folder).
Finally, it’s not too late to join Demystifying Psychology – Course. Contact me, or just come along to session #1, complete an enrolment form, and join in the fun. Jane 0437 621 575, [email protected] The 'Demystifying Psychology Course' is a five-session course held monthly on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00am to 12noon in U3A Room 1 in the Benalla Seniors Building in Fawckner Street, Benalla. Session #1 begins on Tuesday 20 February 2024.
The course is a light-hearted introduction into psychology in everyday life focusing on some theories that attempt to explain how and why we act, think and feel in some circumstances. The course includes personality types and preferred coping styles' theories and practices applied to drug treatment, Donald Trump, and other topics suggested by participants. The course looks at social psychology, concepts of obedience, power, group dynamics and states of mind. We'll discuss how we experience the various theories as they play out in daily life. Enquiries welcome, call Convenor Jane on 0437 621 575. Jane Rushworth 2023’s five monthly sessions have taken us from psychological concepts to applying the concepts in everyday life. We are closing 2023 with a look at “Intelligence and Memory”. The famously brilliant and influential Einstein describes “Intelligence” as “the ability to think, to learn from experience, to solve problems, and to adapt to new situations.” ^ Memory, on the other hand, is “the process of forming a memory involves encoding, storing, retaining and subsequently recalling information and past experiences.” * The two constructs generally work well together .. until they don’t. The dates provided in the previous report were “wonky” and created confusion. To those group members who enjoy a good relationship with their memory/intelligences .. thank you for your patience! The session PowerPoint, which is available below, includes:
UPDATES (please ignore previous)
I would like to end the year with a big thank you to the “Course” group for a satisfying and energetic 2023, and to U3A committee for making Benalla U3A work so smoothly, particularly to Len, Bev and Heather. All the best for 2024. Jane This month we looked at Addiction - an inability to stop using a substance (licit/illicit) or engaging in a behavior even though it is causing psychological and physical harm. The term addiction refers to dependence on substances and/or behaviours that are legal and illegal. We focused on addiction to carbohydrates. This diagram describes the cycle of “carb addiction” and includes biological elements that account for repetitious and potentially dangerous action. Ref:https://www.insurancethoughtleadership Changing addictive behaviours can be very difficult and sometimes impossible, so that living with the addiction might be the best outcome. This diagram describes cycle of change. Think about a time you have made a change in your life, and beginning at “Contemplation”, review your “change” experience and see how it might fit into this model. Substance addiction (licit or illicit) can have significant impacts on lives, communities, and our national budget. While illicit drug use attracts a lot of attention and induces a fair degree of fear, licit drugs have the highest social cost in Australia. The most recent data reported The Social Costs of Alcohol, Tobacco, Opioids, Methamphetamine and Cannabis in Australia (Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia, Nov 2020) tobacco and alcohol have the highest tangible social costs (close to $34 billion combined). Legal drug use accounts for 69%, and illicit drugs account for 31%. Australia’s main tax bases are fuel, tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco tax is the fourth largest individual tax collected at an estimated $15 billion. In 2020 Donald Trump’s leadership style was viewed by many as a passing worry. Others, many in the lower income brackets, welcomed the support and understanding of their plight by this galactically rich man. Three years later, and after losing the last USA election to Biden, Trump remains a viable leadership option for many Americans. September’s course content (see PDF and PowerPoint below) attempted to unravel some of this enigma. Topics covered:
We powered through this content to enjoy the final 30 minutes of agreeable and eclectic conversation. The topics for next month are “Addiction” and a “Day in the Life of a Residential Rehabilitation Centre”.
Next meeting:
Jane Rushworth In August Session 2 we completed our focus on key psychological concepts, highlighting the role of codes of conduct and the disciplinary requirements that underpin sound psychological activities.
We then discussed:
In session 3 we will consider that perennial USA leader, Donald Trump - his childhood influencers, leadership style, expressed values, and, because a leader needs followers, "Trump follower" profiles (USA data). Next meeting: 19 September 10-12 noon @ U3A Room 1 Seniors Building in Fawckner Street. Jane Rushworth This monthly course is content rich and includes some time for questions and group discussion. The purpose of the course is to introduce some basic psychological concepts, and then have fun applying some of these to our everyday life. It’s not too late to join in! The July Session 1 presentation Welcome to Demystifying Psychology Course (DPC) follows and can be downloaded as a PDF. Topics covered included:
We look forward to Session 2 when we will consider:
