Nine of us started the May session with various easy & hard word puzzles including cryptic clues and finished with a memory test.
Next time we'll push word and memory skills a bit further and also sharpen left and right brain with visual shapes and sequences. Elspeth Maconachie After a long break I hope for a good turn up at our May 7th session, especially as we've had two apologies and two "retirements"
Elspeth Maconachie We began by stretching the brain with some mirror- and non-preferred hand drawing and learnt that left handers are inconvenienced by not just scissors but chequebooks and bulky spiral spines on notebooks.
We did some tricky work on words , numbers and riddle-like lateral thinking and all took home a couple more neural links to enhance our brain power. Those who forgot to attend will find it harder to catch up with us and might even overlook that our next session coincides with Easter so that we will meet again on May 7th! Meanwhile I suggest you try a new puzzle, language or counting backwards in threes as you whistle a tune Elspeth Maconachie It was lovely to have such a large brains trust for our initial meeting and hopefully we'll be as smart and versatile in the March gathering where there'll be another range of challenges!
Elspeth Maconachie Brain Games ended the year with the usual mix of challenges starting with a left-hand sketch through to solving cryptic clues
Our guest Ruth did well and we hope to have a few more joining us next year when we'll have just one session each month to fine tune our brain cells. Elspeth Maconachie There were more apologies than attendees but our trio had a lovely session and I think Mardi and I now feel less bluffed by number puzzles. Thanks Deidre!
Hope to see more on Nov 6th. PS final matchsticks puzzle required the removal of sides to form the number 27 which is of course a cube! Try this: Take three matches and turn them into nine. Elspeth Maconachie The small but sharp group left at Brain Games is getting a little too smart and I think they are planning to take over the leadership!! {Luckily I am getting international modelling on how to keep them in line with escalating threats}
Elspeth Maconachie While showing talents in memory, cryptic clues, web throwing and especially life drawing, we still seem a little cowed by number puzzles and may need to give those cells a spell. We need challenges but success is important too! Stretch, relax and later try a fresh look at a daunting puzzle
Elspeth Maconachie We saw some optical tricks and learnt a little about central and peripheral vision and how they are used in processing information- and can be manipulated by magicians.
We tackled contrasting puzzle pages to train left and right brain and challenged our mental flexibility. Though down on numbers we did better than usual on our number puzzles at our second June session. As our next date is during the big move we will in fact be meeting again on third Monday on July 17. Elspeth Maconachie Both our May sessions had cogs turning and we had it further reinforced that sociable and varying mental and physical challenges are useful. We watched brain research and played web ball. We might even be getting close to conquering number puzzles but will still be pleased when Geoff is back to help.
