Members of the Singing for Fun group have excellent voices and get great enjoyment from the variety of songs which the conductors present to them twice a month. The number of members in the group has stayed very similar for a number of years. Hence the repertoire of songs is increasing substantially.
At the Harmony meeting in May our pianist Gwen Barnes guided us through the parts of “Amazing Grace” for Faith Hicks who unfortunately was sick and unable to come to the meeting.
Margaret Merriman helped us with the part singing of “Hallelujah” which should be worth listening to when we have a little more practice.
With the help of Brian Greed we achieved another module of “The Rhythm of Life” and enjoyed singing all the modules of the song we have learned at the one time.
The next meeting of Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 1 June 2017 at 10am at the Baptist Church in Bridge Street.
The Singing for Fun group was saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Borschmann on 24th March 2017. Bob and Joyce started the Singing for Fun group twelve years ago.
The members of Singing for Fun were pleased that Joyce invited the group to lead the singing at Bob’s commemorative service on Friday 31st March at the Benalla Uniting Church. The songs chosen by the family were “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “What a Wonderful World” and “Jerusalem”. Faith Hicks conducted the group whilst Gwen Barnes provided accompaniment on the piano.
At our first meeting in April we were introduced to some breathing exercises by Faith before our rendition of several rounds. The breathing exercises caused a ripple of fun. However, no doubt they will be beneficial to our lung capacity and our ability to hold onto notes in the future.
Margaret Merriman chose some stirring songs including “Wandering the King’s Highway” and “The Holy City” for her part of the session.
At the Harmony Group this month Brian Greed introduced us to another two modules of “The Rhythm of Life”. The group enjoyed the new segments, and are now over half way through learning Brian’s arrangement of this song.
Members of Singing for Fun group are reminded that the Vocal Dimension Group from Wangaratta is performing at the Benalla Town Hall in Nunn Street on Saturday 29th April at 7.30 pm. They will be presenting a selection of sacred choral works at this concert, prior to their participation in the Geelong Festival of Sacred Music in May. The NEO String Ensemble will also be participating in the concert.
Prior concerts by the Vocal Dimension Group have been really enjoyed by our members. Please come and support the singers and have an enjoyable evening.
The next meeting of Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 4th May 2017 at 10am in the Benalla Baptist Church in Bridge Street.

At our third meeting in March we welcomed back Faith Hicks after a recent stay in hospital. She had us singing rounds very enthusiastically and introduced us to a five part round called “Instruments” which we enjoyed and kept the five parts functioning quite well.
Our Harmony Group this month enjoyed learning a new arrangement of “The Rhythm of Life” which had been skillfully put together by Brian Greed. His arrangement of the song has eight modules and we were able to learn three of these modules at our March Harmony meeting.
Our pianist Gwen Barnes ably helped at Harmony with a variety of songs which we had previously learnt. Gwen’s astute ear is really important in picking up small errors that can be easily corrected.
Margaret Merriman guided us through “Hallelujah” which had been suggested by Neville Gibb. Whilst the timing is unusual, Gwen’s brackets on top of the words helped considerably. No doubt we will improve with another couple of sessions.
“Right Said Fred” and “Purple People Eater” were introduced to Singing for Fun this year by Brian. The vast majority of people at Singing for Fun seemed to have already sung and enjoyed both songs in years gone by.
Our next meeting of Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 6th April at 10am in the Benalla Baptist Church.
At our first meeting our Leader Joyce Borschmann welcomed everyone to Singing for Fun for 2017 and introduced Rae Jeffers who is new to Benalla from Mildura.
Joyce thanked Margaret Howard who has been our Treasurer for approximately 10 years. Margaret has done as excellent job of collecting money, paying expenses of the group and keeping a petty cash book of all the transactions involved. Many thanks Margaret for a significant contribution to the group over many years. In 2017 this job is going to be taken over by Peter Simpson.
Singing for Fun is very fortunate to have our pianist Gwen Barnes, who does an excellent job of accompanying the group, and our Musical Leaders Faith Hicks, Brian Greed and Margaret Merriman full of enthusiasm for the coming year. Everyone enjoyed the community singing and round singing at our first meeting of the year.
The Harmony group which meets on the second Thursday of the month started learning portions of some new songs which everyone seemed to enjoy at their first meeting.
Unfortunately Singing for Fun on 16th February was cancelled due to a funeral in the Baptist Church.
The next Singing for Fun will be on Thursday 2nd March at 10am in the Baptist Church, Bridge Street Benalla.
The Singing for Fun group entertained those at the final Meet and Mingle held on the 16th November.
An interesting and varied program has been prepared for the Meet and Mingle morning on Wednesday 16th November. There will be old favorites, toe tappers, harmonious melody and some humorous surprises. We will have a choir of between 25 and 30 people.
A plate of morning tea would be appreciated.
Members are reminded that we are now singing in the SENIOR CITIZENS HALL and not in the "Hub" at Cooinda.
We have only three more sessions before we sing for U3A and Cooinda. We ask that members try to attend all sessions as we need to polish up the songs for our programme which includes some unusual songs. A fun version of Polly Wolly Doodle, Green, Green Grass of Home, and The Ballad of Jed Clampett. Max has been practising his recitation for the last two.
