Our project for this year is progressing well. Some have barely started and some are finished and most are in between. Everyone is enjoying the process. Our Show and Tell has surprised and delighted us as members show their side project. Many photos are on the website.
Here is our project for First Semester 2017. It is called Palais Royale. This is a group requirement. The block when finished can be anything you chose, e.g. Cushion Cover through to Queen Quilt. It has been a while since we have all done the one design. If you did not receive Dorothy's email about the project, please contact her 5762 2116. Palais Royale is a 'Small Project' design by Wattlebird Design - https://wattlebirddesign.com/wattlebirddesign.com/
The Patchwork Group's January quilting activity for 2017 will be held on January 19th between 10 am and 4 pm at the Hub. Dorothy has emailed out the instructions to members - just in case you need them, you can link to them below:
January Quilting Activity Requirements January Quilting Activity Instructions The Patchwork group celebrated the end of a busy year at a special lunch on Thursday 1st December. Lots of quilts were displayed and discussed during 'Show and Tell', with plans being hatched throughout the lunch for further developing skills and producing new quilts in 2017. The 'project' component for next year hasn't been decided upon yet - Dorothy is keen to hear your ideas. Patchwork members were particularly busy in the lead up to November’s display of quilts at Meet and Mingle. This display provided great incentive to complete quilts started during the year and included a number of 2016’s project quilts. Once again we will be displaying our year’s work at the November Meet & Mingle (on the 16th November) at the Seniors Citizens. On Thursday 1st December we will have our end-of-year lunch. Bring a plate & a fat 1/4 to share.
Patchwork meets at the Hub, Cooinda Village from 1 to 4 pm on the first and third Thursday of each month. We had a very successful charity day - thanks to all who came. We will continue with the trading table as wadding is needed. It's always great to take home goodies from the garden. We’re looking forward to seeing some of our group back from their travels.
On Thursday September 1st we are having a charity working day 10 am-4 pm . Quilts and/or toys can be made. We will also have our trading table as we are in need of backing fabric. Looking forward to a very productive day. One of our group has lost or misplaced her large black and silver scissors could you please check your bags and boxes. Phone Dorothy on 5762 2116 Thanks. August... a first quilt, a finished quilt and two works in progressAt our August meeting Heidi presented her first ever quilt - Well done Heidi! A big thank you to all who helped her along the way. Progress is continuing to be made on quilts, with the quilts in the slide show below among those shared during ‘show and tell’ in May. Patchwork group members regularly make and distribute beautiful quilts to organizations including the Benalla Hospital, Children’s Hospital and respite services—some for fundraising, others to be put in use. This month the group participated in a longer session to work on patchwork quilts for refugee families with children who are currently being settled in Albury/Wodonga. Patchwork will meet at The Hub, Cooinda on the 2nd and 16th June.

Everyone is working away on their projects, with photos to appear on the web page over the next few months. Corrie's is the first! As always, if you have any enquiries ring Dorothy on 5762 Corrie's Project Quilt 2016 (Photograph: Corrie Witlox)
We are back up and running with many of our group choosing one of three project quilts. There is still room for anyone interested in doing one of these projects. As always ‘No Pressure’. Everyone can proceed at their own pace with lots of help available along the way.
For those of you on Facebook, I have found a helpful site called 24 Blocks (http://24blocks.com). They have some very easy to watch tutorials. This might be a help to you as it has been to me. As always, if you have any enquiries give me a ring on 5762 2116. Dorothy Bring:
If you have a quilt top ready to quilt you are welcome to bring it along for discussion. If you have any further questions about this please call me on 5762 2116...............Dorothy This beautiful quilt was made by Heather for Doreen, a patchworker who is on the sick list. It is made in the bright colours which Doreen loves and to a pattern she admires. Heather had made room on the back panel for group members to sign. Our patchwork Christmas luncheon will be held at The Hub, Cooinda on Thursday 3rd December at 12.30 p.m. Next year we will be doing a project quilt and will choose the one we will do from three suggestions at the Christmas breakup. Please bring along a plate to share and a wrapped fat quarter as a gift to exchange. Just a reminder that we are having our annual display at Meet & Mingle, which this year will be at the Hub at Cooinda on 18th November. Quilts and display items can be dropped off with Dorothy or brought on the day. It would be appreciated if anyone who has a clothes horse and can bring it along does so.
Next year we will be doing a project quilt so have a look through your magazines and if you find a quilt you would like to do, bring it along and we will vote on the one we will do at our Christmas Breakup which will be on Thursday 3rd December, 12.30pm at the Hub. BYO plate and a wrapped fat quarter as a gift to exchange. We now have a lock on our cupboard so if there is anything you want to borrow from the cupboard on other than a Patchwork day, give Dorothy a ring. Members are having a great time getting their Christmas bunting finished and finishing off their UFOs. The annual escape to the sunshine has meant that numbers have been down over the last couple of months. Enthusiasm will be high when everybody is back
The enthusiastic members of our group continue to produce good work. Those who attend workshops bring back amazing things to show to the group. A project we have going at the moment is a string of Christmas Bunting. It is always fun to do the same thing because it all turns out so different as our imaginations run riot. These will definitely be on show in November with our quilts for all U3A members to see. With the colder weather coming and people heading for warmer climes, those of us who brave Benalla’s winters will continue our friendly get-togethers in the Hub.
Wasn’t it wonderful to see Bridge and Nunn streets decorated with poppies for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipolli landing. It seems strange to celebrate on the day of probably our greatest defeat but we mark the day by commemorating all those who gave their lives or served in this so called Great War and of course all other wars. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars. Congratulations to the committee who worked long and hard before Anzac Day on the display of World War One memorabilia in the Town Hall and who oversaw the decorations in the streets and on the bridge and to the people who knitted or crocheted the poppies. Many shops also decorated their windows for Anzac Day. Well done. In my own small way I contributed to the decorations as firstly I had to learn to crochet (thanks Dorothy) and then made 12 crocheted poppies. Other members of the Patchwork Group also made poppies. We attended the service and the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph on Anzac morning. It was good to see the large numbers attending. Apparently the Dawn Service was also very well attended. We went to BPACC in the afternoon to see ‘The Drums of Time’ written by Matt Scholten and performed by GRADA students. It was based on letters and stories of Benalla’s World War One soldiers and nurses along with war poetry. It was a theatrical tribute to the service and sacrifice of Benalla’s ANZACs and was specially created for the Benalla community. The stage was simply but very effectively decorated with strings of knitted poppies which were illuminated from above. These were made by members of the CWA. As I crocheted the poppies I thought of all those who gave their lives in several wars and the women at home who knitted and baked for their men and the nurses who cared for them. Judith A suggestion for a project for this year was a series of Christmas flags to string across the fireplace for Christmas. Each one would be different but all with a Christmas theme and in Christmas fabric. Patterns will be available at patchwork meeting
Our meeting in February was, as usual, very enjoyable. Some people had their crocheting, some had their knitting, and the rest had their patchwork. We all enjoyed our usual gossip, and talked over possible projects for the next few weeks. Lorraine
To start off the year we gathered at the Hub for a workshop, amid cups of coffee and tea we had a great time, with plenty of chances to catch up after the holidays. The subject for the days workshop was foundation piecing, this was a great success with quite a few girls going on to make a quilt. Of course they are W.I.Ps (works in progress) You'll have to wait till November to maybe see at least a couple of finished quilts. Lorraine.
