Our session on 'Scams' has been held over to Wednesday 15th September when Senior Constable Lisa Atkinson from the Benalla Police will outline the variety of scams which can be encountered, and ways to cope with them. Margaret Jenkins Senior Constable Lisa Atkinson from the Benalla Police will be the Guest Speaker at July’s Meet and Mingle which will be held on Wednesday 21st July at 10 am in the U3A Room at the Benalla Seniors Centre.
The topic which will be covered is Scams. Senior Constable Atkinson, who is the Community Liaison Officer at Benalla Police, will outline the variety of scams which can be encountered, and ways to cope with them. Should be an interesting morning. All welcome. Margaret Jenkins At the May Meet and Mingle we had an interesting presentation from Kathryn McQualter, a Dietician at Benalla Health. Kathryn spoke on “Climate Change and Health” and linked her talk into what was happening at Benalla Health regarding various climate issues. We also saw a very interesting aerial picture of Benalla taken from near the Benalla Racecourse. There were a number of questions at the end of Kathryn’s talk showing that the audience appreciated the presentation . Following morning tea we heard from Jane Archbold, Manager Community at Benalla Rural City Council regarding the Benalla Council Plan. It was a great forum for our U3A members to have their say regarding various aspects of what was happening in Benalla. Jane encouraged those with well thought through points to put them in writing and submit them on one of the Postcards which she distributed. The June meeting of Meet and Mingle is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 16th June at 10am in the U3A room at the Benalla Senior’s Centre. The guest speaker will be Moussa Taouk who has a Goat cheese farm at Glenrowan. All welcome.
Margaret Jenkins May’s Meet and Mingle will be held on Wednesday 19th May at the U3A area in the Seniors Centre. We are fortunate to have Kathryn McQualter, a dietitian from Benalla Health to speak at the May Meet and Mingle. The topic of her talk will be Climate Change and Health.
Margaret Jenkins In an Anzac Day themed Meet and Mingle on Wednesday 21st April, Brian Vial explored the topic ‘World War II - Was there ever a battle for Australia??’ Some military historians say YES while others insist NO. On the 26th of June each year the Australian War Memorial holds a ceremony in honour of this battle. Should this remembrance be discontinued? Brian discussed the merits of both views. Meet and MIngle Convenor and Vice President Bill Parris retired from his position as convenor of Meet and Mingle after his retirement as Vice President at the March AGM. New Vice President Margaret Jenkins is taking up the reins.
Thank you Bill for arranging such an interesting selection of speakers and wherever possible facilitating Covid break gatherings in the Benalla Gardens over the past eighteen months or so! Benalla Historical Society member Robyn Sadler gave an interesting presentation at Meet and Mingle in March after officiating at the AGM. Robyn provided a history of the development of the Museum to date and described the impact on the group of the renovations and further development of the Museum precinct. Historical society members will clearly have a major task ahead to pack up the contents of the museum until the Museum reopens in approximately 12 months. Benalla Rural City Council Mayor Danny Claridge also attended the meeting, responding to Robyn’s presentation from a Council perspective. At our next Meet and Mingle on Wednesday 21st April Brian Vial will explore the topic ‘World War II - Was there ever a battle for Australia??’
Bill Parris The 2021 Annual General meeting will be held on 17th March, 2021 at the March Meet & Mingle activity.
The AGM commences at 10.00am. For members who are interested in standing for the U3a Committee, a downloadable Nomination form can be found below. All members are encouraged to attend this activity and keep up to date with the status of our organisation. Update - This event was cancelled as it fell within the 5 day lockdown.
This is a general social gathering of members to have morning tea, a chat, and listen to a guest speaker. As numbers for this group raise concerns in relation to social distancing in the U3A Meeting Room, we our first Meet and Mingle session for 2021 will be held in the Benalla Gardens under the trees near the Benalla Art Gallery on Wednesday 17th February. The sessions held in the gardens were most enjoyable in the latter part of 2020 session. We will gather from 10 to 11.30 am – bring your own morning tea and chair! The Meet and Mingle meeting on Wednesday 17th March will include the U3A Benalla and District Annual General Meeting. On Wednesday 15th April, Brian Vial will speak on an Anzac topic – numbers may be limited and RSVP’s required. Bill Parris 0417 329 278 A pre Christmas 'Meet and Mingle' in the Benalla Gardens - Wednesday 16 December, 10 to 11.30 am2/12/2020
On the December 16 2020, a “Meet and Mingle” will be held in the Benalla Gardens for U3a members who wish to attend. It will be the final opportunity for members to get together before Christmas. The activity will commence at 10.0am until 11.30am. As we have done previously, bring your own chair, beverages and morning tea. We will be able to meet without masks as long as we maintain our social distance.
Bill Parris At our first Meet and Mingle for 2020 Suzie Pearce, spokesperson for Better Benalla Rail, presented reasons for their opposition to Australian Rail Track Corporation's (ARTC) plans to increase the size on our railway overpass to enable 1.8km double-stacked freight trains transit Benalla. They seek support from us for their alternative plan to move the XPT track so that trains can travel straight through Benalla.
If you would like to keep track of their progress, check out the Better Benalla Rail website; the Better Rail for Benalla Facebook group page or pop in to their newly opened Pop Up Shop at 81 Nunn Street, Benalla. Bill Parris The October Meet and Mingle was held during Seniors Week with a morning tea and entertainment from the Recorder Group and a display by Collectors. An invitation was also extended to the Senior Citizens to attend this combined event. A BBQ luncheon followed, with the help of Benalla Lions group. A short Be Connected session was presented by Margaret Jenkins, giving an outline of what if covered in the Be Connected activities.
The final Meet and Mingle for 2019 will be on Wednesday 20th November when Singing for Fun group will entertain us and the Patchwork group will exhibit patchwork projects and quilts they have completed this year. Bill Parris Seniors Week Morning Tea
On our Meet and Mingle day, Wednesday 16th October we are having a special Morning Tea to celebrate Seniors Week. Our Recorder Group will perform for us and a display of `Collectables’ from our Collectors group will be on display. Many thanks to Benalla Council for providing $500 towards the cost of this morning tea. This Grant is part of community funding for Seniors Week in Benalla. Get Online Week BBQ lunch Following our Morning Tea U3A will launch `Get Online Week’. A requirement for our Grant from the Good Things Foundation which organises Be Connected is to hold a function to launch our Get Online Program during the week of the 14th – 18th October. We have organised a BBQ lunch following our Morning Tea at our rooms, so stay on after Morning Tea and learn a bit more about our `Online’ Be Connected Course and enjoy a very sociable BBQ lunch. As Technology increasingly takes over our lives the Courses we have run have been well attended and give our members more confidence to cope with all things technical. Geraldine McCorkell |
Meet and MingleAt the beginning of each Meet and Mingle, news from the U3A Benalla Committee meeting held the previous week will be shared with those attending.
