Huggins Lookout report then Easy Walks in June and July

31/5/2016

Easy and Mid-week walk - Huggins Lookout - Bright and Wandiligong.

On Wednesday May 11, twelve walkers from both the Easy and Mid-Week bushwalking groups met at the old tennis courts to set off for Bright on a rather cloudy morning.  It started raining when we reached Myrtleford which was rather ominous, but we drove on and had a morning tea stop at Centenary Park in Bright.  The rain stopped and we drove to Deacon Avenue to start the climb to Huggins Lookout.   The view over the township was great, with quite a lot of autumn colour.  After a lot of looking and chatting we went back down to the cars.

Then on to Alpine Park, Wandiligong where we had lunch before setting off for the Wandi Wander.  It started at the footbridge over Morses creek, up to School Road where we had great views over the township.   It was interesting to see an orchard of persimmons, the trees loaded with lovely golden fruit.  Walking south we continued over the Royal Bridge to the “Diggings” where we visited the new building on the site of the old Joss House, and in the opposite direction to the Chinese Bridge.   Then on to the Swing Bridge and back to Alpine Park for afternoon tea.   The rain started again just as we were leaving to come home.   As Vaughan was unable to come on this great walk we had many leaders which created a lot of talk.  Marion

Easy Walk - Wednesday 1 June

The Spit in the Winton Wetlands.   With the cooler weather, there should be less snakes, so we will do a short version of the Spit walk in the Winton Wetlands.  It is an interesting area with historic geological importance.  We will leave Benalla at 10.00am.

Easy walk - July 6

The Sunrise track, Warby Ranges.  On the sunny side of the range, there is a climb for a start, with good views. Ring Vaughan Cowan 5762 1980. We will leave Benalla at 10.00am.

Carter's Mill report; coming up in May, Bright & Wandiligong

6/5/2016

On Wednesday 6 April, ten walkers headed to the site of Carter’s Mill on the Delatite River, just off the Mansfield – Mt. Buller Road, past Sawmill Settlement.  The mill was destroyed by fire in 1965, but there are still traces of the wooden tram line which transported timber from the area to the north.  There is a very good partially looped track to the remains of a bridge, and many informative plaques along the way.  A large part of the track is beside, or crossing Plain Creek, with various ferns, and the higher land has beautiful stately gum trees.  The distance was just under 6km, and there are good picnic facilities.  We had some light drizzle during the walk, and it got heavier as we returned to the cars for lunch, but the trip was very enjoyable.
Easy walk - Wednesday 11 May - Bright and Wandiligong

Please note we are combining this walk with the mid-week walkers, as it is not a strenuous walk.  I hope this does not prevent anyone from walking the second Wednesday.

This year we make our annual autumn foliage trip to Bright and Wandiligong.  As a slight change, we will start by climbing to Huggin's Lookout, for an overview of the township.  Then to Wandiligong for lunch and the traditional 'Wandi wander"

Ring Vaughan Cowan 5762 1980 and meet at the Flexible Learning Centre at 8.45am for 9.00am departure.

Easy walk - Wednesday 1 June    The Spit in the Winton Wetlands.

With the cooler weather, there should be less snakes, so we will do a short version of the Spit walk in the Winton Wetlands.  It is an interesting area with historic geological importance.  Hopefully it will have rained by then.

We will leave Benalla at 10.00am.

    About Easy Bushwalking

This is a group for those who have enjoyed 'Serious Bushwalking' in the past who now need to moderate their walks, but any member of U3A is welcome to join.

It is a very social group for anyone interested in exploring the amazing tracks, trails and lookouts within an easy to medium drive from Benalla.

Even though the occasional weather glitch has challenged us over the past few years, the group has enjoyed many memorable times exploring our local area.

Meeting on the first Wednesday of each month, the walks are  limited to 8kms, generally on well-defined tracks, occasionally with a short easy climb.

The day's outing can include sites of historical or botanical interest and occasionally even a Winery!

Even though the walks are labelled Easy Walks, it is important that participants be able to walk at a reasonable pace and be able to keep up with the group. Sturdy shoes are essential! You will also need to carry a small daypack with lunch, drinks, hat, wet weather gear, etc as needed.

Ride sharing is usually available at a small cost: $5 or $10.
