Session 5 - 'A Day in the Life of a Resi Rehab'

23/6/2024

The Demystifying Psychology Course group has concluded for 2024.

In this session, "A Day in the Life of a Resi Rehab", we :
  1. Look at Victoria's Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) support systems for people affected by substance dependence (see slide # 6),
  2. Discovered  the benefits of "Communiques" as a treatment tool in AOD.
  3. Reviewed 5 sessions by measuring participant progress in each session.

'A Day in the Life of a Resi Rehab' Powerpoint - PDF

"Communiques" are a highly structured and supported conversation between two people, one with a complaint about the other. AOD residential treatment services, such as Odyssey House, have had significant success using "Communiques". The key purpose of a "Communique" is for an aggrieved person (often an AOD resident) to be supported to moderate and manage uncomfortable feelings .

A "Communique" generally has 3 parts:
  1. Description of the event, eg, "when we were washing the dishes, you said .."
  2. Description of the aggrieved person's feelings about that event, eg. "when you said (xyz) I felt ...."
  3. An outcome, for example "I want you to ......" (apologise, not to speak to me that way again ... etc)

Other people usually involved in the discussion:
  • Support person for the aggrieved person.
  • Support person for the wrong-doer
  • Discussion facilitator.
  • AOD therapist

The aim of a "Communique" is met if the process has helped the aggrieved person regulate their feelings, the concerning behaviour (if any) ceases, and the matter is resolved satisfactorily.

Then we got onto the final task for the semester - reviewing the course using the feedback format below. Session #1 started with participants scoring their level of confidence in these topic which would be covered over the five session program. Today the group reviewed the same list and self-assessed for any changes in levels of confidence. When shared with the convener, these scores can be excellent indicators of the effectiveness of session content. Where the scores demonstrate enhanced confidence in a topic, a convener is reassured that the content design is on track. Scores that are stagnant or regress are a good indication the content needs reviewing.

Session 5   'Intelligence and Memory'

29/11/2023

2023’s five monthly sessions have taken us from psychological concepts to applying the concepts in everyday life.  We are closing 2023 with a look at “Intelligence and Memory”. The famously brilliant and influential Einstein describes “Intelligence” as “the ability to think, to learn from experience, to solve problems, and to adapt to new situations.” ^

Memory, on the other hand, is “the process of forming a memory involves encoding, storing, retaining and subsequently recalling information and past experiences.” *

The two constructs generally work well together .. until they don’t. The dates provided in the previous report were “wonky” and created confusion. To those group members who enjoy a good relationship with their memory/intelligences .. thank you for your patience!

The session PowerPoint, which is available below, includes:
  • Puzzles
  • Videos
  • Theories of intelligence
  • How to do quantitative reasoning
  • Problems with IQ tests ..
……. and much more to ponder over as you enjoy a cuppa.

I would like to end the year with a big thank you to the “Course” group for a satisfying and energetic 2023, and to U3A committee for making Benalla U3A work so smoothly, particularly to Len, Bev and Heather.

All the best for 2024.

Jane

The 'Demystifying Psychology Course' is a five-session course held monthly on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00am to 12noon in U3A Room 1 in the Benalla Seniors Building in Fawckner Street, Benalla.  Session #1 begins on Tuesday 20 February 2024.

The course is a light-hearted introduction into psychology in everyday life focusing on some theories that attempt to explain how and why we act, think and feel in some circumstances.

The course includes personality types and preferred coping styles' theories and practices applied to drug treatment, Donald Trump, and other topics suggested by participants.

The course looks at social psychology, concepts of obedience, power, group dynamics and states of mind.  We'll discuss how we experience the various theories as they play out in daily life.
