Preparing for Session 1 - "I can hear groaning... "Homework"!"

Greetings Everyone and all the best for an interesting and enjoyable 2024.

Sessions will be held monthly on the 3rd Tuesday beginning Tuesday 20th February from 10:00am to 12:00pm in U3A Room 1 in the Benalla Seniors Building in Fawckner Street, Benalla. Following sessions will be held on March 19th, April16th, May 21st, and June 18th.

Expect session #1 to be a bit information dense. You will be introduced to some frequently used concepts and engage in two “hands-on” activities – (1) pre and post testing, and (2) completing a personality type inventory (see below). The good news is these activities are homework assignments to complete and bring to session #1. (I can hear groaning … “Homework!!).

Demystifying Psychology Course - "Late enrolments welcome!"

This monthly course is content rich and includes some time for questions and group discussion. The purpose of the course is to introduce some basic psychological concepts, and then have fun applying some of these to our everyday life. It’s not too late to join in!

The July Session 1 presentation Welcome to Demystifying Psychology Course (DPC) follows and can be downloaded as a PDF. Topics covered included:

What is Psychology - See slides 9 (video) and 10.
Theories- what qualifies as a theory, some notable theorists. Slides 13, and 28-31
Measurement in psychology - including pre and post measurement - see "Feedback template 2023" and slides 15,16 and 18
Ethics and psychology part 1 - Slides 25 and 26

We look forward to Session 2 when we will consider:

Pre and post measurement results,
History of (Un)ethical psychological research,
Overview of Preferred Coping Styles,
Individual preferred Coping styles (2017 Preferred Coping Style - Inventory),
How various coping styles work effectively.

Session 2 will be held from 10 - 12 noon on 15 August in U3A Classroom 1 at Benalla Senior Citizen Community Centre in Fawckner Drive. Late enrolments are welcome at this class.

The remaining dates are 3rd Tuesdays at 10-12 noon on 15 August, 19 September, 17 October, and 21 November. A casual course review will be held at Ruby Blue Cafe (67 Nunn Street) on 28 November 10:00 to 12:00 noon.

'Demystifying Psychology' Course

The 'Demystifying Psychology Course' is a five-session course held monthly on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00am to 12noon in U3A Room 1 in the Benalla Seniors Building in Fawckner Street, Benalla. Session #1 begins on Tuesday 20 February 2024.

The course is a light-hearted introduction into psychology in everyday life focusing on some theories that attempt to explain how and why we act, think and feel in some circumstances.

The course includes personality types and preferred coping styles' theories and practices applied to drug treatment, Donald Trump, and other topics suggested by participants.

The course looks at social psychology, concepts of obedience, power, group dynamics and states of mind. We'll discuss how we experience the various theories as they play out in daily life.
