Brain Games is back, in a new time slot! 4th Tuesday 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm - Tuesday 22 February!
In our March session we had a visitor, Peter, who'd misread the calendar but joined in the shape, word and number puzzles, tried a drawing and contributed to solving the rebus-riddles.
Please remember that such solitary pursuits as drawing and juggling are excellent ways to retain brain fitness and even sitting at a different place at the dinner table or tying the other shoelace first helps keep the attitude adaptable. Elspeth In our first session we fired new neural pathways with finger exercise, body writing and pine cone sketching before seeing word links, working out number pyramids and trying a couple of logic puzzles and finished with a web throw to exercise our brain/eye/hand dexterity.
I hope that in our March session we'll be joined by a few people who were not on my early roll and thus missed the reminder of the February start. Elspeth Maconachie Our final session included balance, eye hand coordination and mental gymnastics.
We'll have several keen starters when we come back next February. Elspeth Maconachie We spent much of the October session straining our brains on puzzles with odd names like Samurai Sudoku, Kakuro, Number Pyramid, JigsawDoku and Ensaimada with more restful interludes of drawing, word invention and logic patterns.
Elspeth Maconachie Apologies all round - there were so many that I cancelled but I apologise to those who didn't see my email notification in time. We'll be back in October!
Elspeth Maconachie A group of eight gathered to puzzle over patterns and logical sequences, test knowledge and sketch with non-preferred hand or an inverted image thus firing a few new neural pathways. It's always an enjoyable effort.
Elspeth Maconachie Tip of the month: twiddling your thumbs is good brain exercise, as long as you also twiddle each pair of fingers, backwards and forwards, in turn. Physical exercise like gardening is also good for the brain -see Garden Team below.
Elspeth Maconachie Despite the winter lull we had ample brain cells to conquer visual, numeric and word challenges. We will be interested to hear more of the book Rae is reading about memory in various cultures, especially those with oral traditions.
Elspeth Maconachie It's hard to recall what we did in the last session without my book at hand . Guess that means we'd better get back to more memory training next time.

About Brain Games
It is well established that new skills can help build brain pathways with benefits for memory, confidence, happiness and even falls prevention. Brain Games offers a variety of entertaining and informative ways to challenge, inform and exercise your brain. Thus we might solve word, number, shape, picture or logic puzzles, take part in a quiz, brainstorm solutions to a dilemma, draw a picture or maybe even learn to juggle! We may, at times, read or view material on topics such as dementia, brain repair...etc), gender differences, optimism and pessimism, lateral thinking and creativity.
